The Amazing Spider-Man sequel set for release on May 2nd 2014!

Sony isn't wasting any time, are they? The Amazing Spider-Man isn't close to coming out yet, not until July of next year. And already they've locked up a May 2nd 2014 release date for the sequel. Jumping the gun, maybe? Counting their spiders before they've.....hatched? Do spiders hatch? Whatever.

I guess this shouldn't be a total surprise. James Vanderbilt was brought back in March to begin work on scripting the sequel. I don't know if today's news is an indication of how the the studio feels about the script, or just locking up one of the year's prime dates before anybody else grabs it.

We can assume Andrew Garfield will be back wearing the red and blue duds. Emma Stone has said her Gwen Stacy character will be around for more than one film(although I think she'll die sooner than later), but what about director Marc Webb? That's a murkier question, and one we likely won't be better able to gauge until we see what the reaction to this relaunch is. Unlike some folks I don't think it's nearly a guarantee to be a smash hit.
