Casey Affleck to play the angel Gabriel in Paradise Lost

It might be hard to remember anything that happened back in 1999 since we were all tearing our hair over the Y2K apocalypse right around the corner, but that was also the year that Ben Affleck donned a pair of angel wings and a suit of armor and proceeded to kick the snot out of Jay and Silent Bob in Dogma. Whether his little bro, Casey, was jealous or not I don't know, but if so he'll get a chance to prove his halo shines just a little bit brighter as he's set to play Gabriel in Alex Proyas' massive adaptation of Paradise Lost.

Variety has the story, noting that Casey has entered negotiations for the film, marking a pretty steep shift from his murderous lead role in The Killer Inside Me. He'll join a cast that includes Bradley Cooper as Lucifer, Benjamin Walker as the angel Michael, and Djimon Hounsou as Abdiel, the angel of Death. Gabriel is God's trusted, six-winged messenger. He's also the one who foretold the birth of Jesus.

An adaptation of John Milton's 17th century poem, it tells the epic war between God and Satan, the fall of Man, and the temptation of Adam and Eve. Proyas's version will be a hugely expensive, special effects heavy spectacle. So much so that an extended pre and post production is necessary to accommodate it. As such it won't hit theaters until late in 2013.

As for Affleck, he'll be seen in November alongside Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy in the crime caper, Tower Heist.
