John Singleton may direct Ice Cube's N.W.A. biopic
Ice Cube has been trying to get his planned biopic on his life as a member of the legendary, groundbreaking hip hop group, N.W.A., for a couple of years now. I always found it a little curious he'd want to revisit that time of his career since he's so thoroughly moved beyond it, becoming the family friendly actor we saw in happy junk like Are We There Yet? and it's atrocious sequel. As someone who grew up during the N.W.A. heyday(with the "Fuck Da Police" t-shirts to prove it) it's something I desperately want to see get done. When last we heard about it, Andrea Berloff(World Trade Center) had come aboard as one of the writers and the film really started to round into shape.
Now we're seeing what may be the most significant movement yet, as John Singleton(Boyz N tha Hood) revealed that he's talking to Cube about joining the film, likely in a directorial role...
“I can’t talk about it too prematurely about the stuff I’m doing because nothing’s come to fruition yet, but Cube and I are talking about doing the N.W.A. story,”he script is really, really good, and so we’re just figuring it out. New Line really wants to make it.”
This comes courtesy of ThePlaylist, who were on hand for a Los Angeles presser for Singleton's latest film, Abduction. Singleton and Ice Cube have been frequent collaborators in the past so this only make sense. Singleton and Cube carried eachother into the Hollywood spotlight back in 1991 with Boyz N The Hood. They would go on to work together again on Higher Learning just a few years later.
The infrequency with which we see Singleton behind the camera has been confusing to say the least. He's made some truly memorable(if overrated) films like the aforementioned Boyz in the Hood and Higher Learning, and even a Hollywood blockbuster or two(2 Fast 2 Furious). Abduction, which'll be Twilight star Taylor Lautner's first shot at solo superstardom(or so we think), may be Singleton's biggest film yet, and can only bode well for the chances of an NWA film getting made.
