Tops at the Box Office: The Lion King re-emerges at the top of the food chain
1. The Lion King 3D- $29.3M
I don't know what to say. A 17 year old cartoon, albeit an amazing one, gets re-released in 3D and it's the #1 film of the week? It's not like the competition was all that weak. I mean it's going up against Drive, the film which has some of the best reviews of the year. Not to mention Contagion is still hanging around. But here it is, and this has to bode well for James Cameron's re-release of Titanic, already the 2nd highest grossing film ever and likely to line the King of the World's pockets with tons more cash.
2. Contagion- $14.48M/$44.2M
Slipping down 35% from last week is Steven Soderbergh's Contagion, but that's actually not such a bad thing. The dip in attendance is fairly minimal, and the strong word of mouth should sustain it for a few more weeks. Contagion is a certified hit.
3. Drive- $11M
Kudos to FilmDistrict for selling Drive the way it deserved to be, as an upper class action flick that shouldn't be confused with The Fast and the Furious. That might've dulled the box office receipts somewhat(along with an ugly C- Cinemascore), but I think it'll pay off in the long run.
4. The Help- $6.43M/$147.3M
5. Straw Dogs- $5M
Yikes. Ok, well it's not like very many people outside of older folks and critics remember Sam Peckinpah's original. So this one falls squarely on Screen Gems for marketing this thing like your standard, everyday low budget thriller. They even went so far to show the spooked audience reaction shots like it was Paranormal Activity or something. That stuff just doesn't work anymore.
6. I Don't Know How She Does It- $4.5M
Can this please be the end of anybody's attempt to turn Sarah Jessica Parker into a star? Sex and the City is what made her, and there's absolutely zero people who will pay to see her otherwise.
7. The Debt- $2.9M/$26.5M
I'm amazed at the legs this little buzzed about political thriller has, but it's clearly found an audience with older viewers coming to see Helen Mirren kill some Nazis.
8. Warrior- $2.77M/$9.9M
Oooff. This one's pretty ugly. Warrior's tumbling hard behind films that have been out for weeks, all but killing any hopes for an Oscar. Let's hope they don't forget Nick Nolte though. Low grosses or not he deserves recognition.
9. Rise of the Planet of the Apes- $2.6M/$171.6M
10. Colombiana- $2.3M/$33M
