Trailer Time: The Swell Season, starring Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová
I still swoon a little bit just thinking of my first experience seeing the great little musical romance, Once, way back in 2007. Sheesh, has it really been four years since that little film about a Dublin musician(The Frames' Glen Hansard) and Czech single mother piano player(Marketa Irglova) begin to fall in love with eachother over their mutual love of making music. The film had a gritty realism to it, partially because Hansard and Irglova, collaborators before the film, began to fall in love for real while on set. If you look at the film closely, you can almost see it happening right before your eyes, especially in the key scene where they perform the acclaimed single, Falling Slowly. There are few films I would say are perfect, but Once comes damn close. I loved it so much, in fact, that I began collecting all of Hansard and Irglova's albums as The Swell Season.
If you've seen the film, then you know things don't quite turn out as one might expect for the lovelorn duo, but I maintained hope things would work out better in real life. Unfortunately, Hansard and Irglova did eventually break up, but remained friends and musical partners. Now there's a new movie, a documentary titled The Swell Season, chronicling their rise to fame and the obvious difficulties balancing that success with their budding relationship. Not gonna lie, I teared up a little bit watching this new trailer for it, but if I could say there's a certainty in anything it's that I will adore this movie...
Directed by Nick August-Perna, Chris Dapkins, and Carlo Mirabella-Davis, it'll get a limited run in theaters next month. If you haven't seen Once, run out and get it right now.
