Producer talks Spike Lee's Oldboy remake; reveals Battle Royale remake struggles
Excuse me, you don't f**k with Oldboy's hallway scene. If you've ever seen Park Chan-Wook's classic revenge thriller, then those 4 minutes are no doubt burned into your memory, when Oh Dae-Su armed with nothing but a hammer and a "I don't give a sh*t" attitude bulldozes his way through dozens of armed thugs in a narrow hallway. Everything about it, from the character's fury to the amazing music are simply perfect. With Spike Lee remaking the film, one of my biggest worries was that they'd screw with it somehow, and it appears that's exactly what's happening.
Roy Lee, one of the film' producers, recently sat down with Shocktilyoudrop about Spike Lee and writer Mark Protosevich's plans, and while he insists their will be similarities to Park Chan-Wook's version, there will also be some significant changes...
"We are planning to shoot 'Old Boy' in March and that should start pre-production in late January," he said. "This is a brand new script by Mark Protosevich. It is very similar to the film, but Protosevich has added new elements that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie because there are new characters and new situations that present themselves in a way that change the story but eventually go in the same direction. The ending will be something audiences--especially fans of the original movie--will be very happy with. Some may consider it a bit darker."
He added that "there's going to be a different interpretation of the hallway scene that is hopefully going to be Spike's signature moment in the movie that he wants to show in a way that has never been seen in an action movie."
Even darker than the original? Ok, I'm down with that. It's expected that the story would stick a little closer to the manga, and I think Lee's comments support that. As long as they don't tone down the tortured nature of the main character(played by Josh Brolin), then I have faith that Spike Lee will deliver a film equally powerful to Park Chan-Wook's. I don't know what the heck they mean by a different interpretation of the hallway scene, but it continues to worry me.
Roy Lee also took a moment to talk about the struggles with getting an American remake of Battle Royale off the ground. Thankfully for people like me who don't want to see this amazing film remade at all, it appears the presence of The Hunger Games has killed off what little momentum the remake had...
"Hunger Games took a lot of wind out of the sails of [a U.S. version of Battle Royale] because of its similar storyline and so I'm not exactly sure any studio--even before 'Hunger Games'--would have taken the creative risks you would have needed to take to make the movie right now so would be even harder,"
For those who haven't seen it, here is that awesome hallway fight from Oldboy. Just as vicious now as ever.
