Truman Capote's Summer Crossing to be Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut
Swoon! It's become kinda fashionable to knock Scarlett Johansson lately, but the girl's got skills. Sure she's played her share of sex pot roles(hello, The Spirit! hello Black Widow!), yet that hasn't stopped her from working with some of the best filmmakers working today, like Sophia Coppola, Woody Allen, and Cameron Crowe. Perhaps that's what gave her the directing bug, because she's set to make her behind the camera debut with an adaptation of Truman Capote's Summer Crossing.
Written around 1943 but lost until it was discovered in 2004 and published a year later, the book is technically Capote's first. The story centers on the racy love affair between Grady McNeil, a 17-year old upper class Protestante, and Clyde, a Jewish war veteran now working as a parking attendant. It doesn't go well, as they discover the cultural and social differences may be too much to overcome.
This wouldn't be Johansson's first directing effort, as she helmed one of the vignettes that made up New York, I Love You. It didn't make the final cut of the film, but is available to be seen on the DVD. It's pretty good, and worth a look. Tristin Skyler(The Bell Jar) will be working out the script, so this one's still a ways off. [Variety]
