Colin Firth turns down offer for Spike Lee's Oldboy remake

Well, this is what happens when you cover the "offer story". Colin Firth has turned down a chance to star in Spike Lee's planned remake of Oldboy, according to Twitch. No reason was given for the refusal, but I'm just gonna guess it was due to his already busy schedule. This makes two villainous roles in a row he's turned down, ironically both having to do with South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-Wook.

Firth would've been up for the role of Adrian, the man who kicks things into motion by kidnapping Josh Brolin's character and holding him captive for 15 years before releasing him suddenly. It's all part of a complicated, very personal vengeance he's seeking, one that I wouldn't dare spoil here. Watch the original if you're curious, although you should note that the remake script by Mark Protosevich might alter a few details.

Oldboy was initially a popular and very violent manga created by Nobuaki Minegishi, but it's the South Korean film adaptation by Park Chan-Wook that most people swear by. His English language debut, Stoker, also features a bad guy role which Colin Firth had initially been attached to, but he had to drop out and was replaced by his A Single Man co-star, Matthew Goode.
