Summer Wars' Mamoru Hosoda preps next film, The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki
As I try to ease myself back into the world of anime, one of the best films I've seen recently was Summer Wars, from Mamoru Hosoda, the man I personally consider to have surpassed the great Hayao Miyazaki(Spirited Away). At least when it comes to storytelling ability and creating fun, believable characters in lush, imaginative worlds.
A new website has been launched to promote the release of Hosoda's next film, The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki. I'm assuming that title will change when it's localized and distributed here in the States. The story centers on 19-year old Hana, who falls into "fairy tale love" with a wolf man. The two are married, and Hana gives birth to two half breed children: an older sister named Yuki, born on a snowy day, and her little brother Ame born on a rainy day. When the wolf man dies soon after, Hana moves them all to a rural town far away from the city. I'm assuming it's there that they will run into some trouble, but the theme of the film is described as being on a parent's love for their children. Hosoda will also co-write the script with Satoko Okudera, his collaborator on Summer Wars.
So this sounds less action intensive, less sprawling than Summer Wars or Hosoda's equally brilliant The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. The film will release in Japan next July, and expect an English language version to arrive shortly thereafter.
