* Not good. Alex Proyas' big budget, 3D adaptation of John Milton's Biblical poem Paradise Lost has been put on hold, citing script problems and the massive cost. Warner Brothers is pushing back the January start date on the film, which was set to star Bradley Cooper, Camilla Belle, Djimon Hounsou, Casey Affleck, and Benjamin Walker. The film isn't cancelled, with Legendary Pictures still developing, but expect that huge 72 weeks of expensive post-production Proyas was planning to be wittled down. The release date has been set for some time in 2013, so it'll likely still hit that mark.[Deadline]
* As much as I love Maggie Gyllenhaal, there will always be a special place in my heart for Winona Ryder, and I keep hoping she'll be as Hollywood relevant as she used to be. The Dilemma and Black Swan were a good start, but this could be the film that truly does it. Ryder will replace Gyllenhaal in mob flick, The Iceman, which currently stars Michael Shannon(Take Shelter) as notorious mafia enforcer Richard Kuklinski. Ryder will play Kuklinski's wife, while the rest of the oddball casting includes David Schwimmer as murderer Josh Rosenthal, Chris Evans as Kuklinski's mentor, and roles for Ray Liotta and Ryan O'Neal. Ariel Vromen is directing.[Deadline]
* American History X director, Tony Kaye, is circling his next project. The film is Attachment, and the story by Christopher Denham is centered on a married woman's one night stand with a student. The affair comes back to haunt her when he starts dating her daughter and begins stalking the entire family. I haven't heard much from Kaye lately, but his upcoming film, ironically named Detachment, turned some heads in the festival circuit. It releases in February, and stars Adrien Brody as a substitute teacher who has a very different approach to teaching than his permanent colleagues. [Variety]
