Sure Shots: Charlie Kaufman; 'Man of Tai Chi'; Frances McDormand

* In a recent lecture, Charlie Kaufman revealed that his upcoming film, Frank or Francis will be a full blown musical, which makes the casting of Steve Carell, Nicolas Cage, and Jack Black even more exciting. Also starring Kevin Kline, the story is basically a scathing send up of the entertainment news industry, in particular movie bloggers. Kaufman's second directorial effort after 2008's Synecdoche, New York, it's looking more likely we'll see it some time in 2013. Musicals tend to rub me the wrong way, but I don't expect the genius mind behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Adaptation, and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind(hey, I love that flick!) to let me down. * I know it's hard to imagine, but Keanu Reeves will soon be adding writer/director to his resume. Universal gave the greenlight to his martial arts flick, Man of Tai Chi, a few days ago, with Reeves set to play the villain and Tiger Chen(who trained Reeves for The Matrix) as the film's star. Chinese singer/actress Karen Mok is the latest to join the film, beating out actresses like Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li for the role of a police officer. Shooting will kick off in February for a likely 2013 release. [Twitch]

*  We still don't know much about Matt Damon's still untitled directorial debut, but the pieces already in place have to put it up there as a potential force. Damon will star, with The Office's John Krasinski attached since the very beginning, and now you can add the great Frances McDormand. Based on an idea by Dave Eggers(Away We Go, Where the Wild Things Are), and co-written by Damon and Krasinski, the story follows a salesman who enters a small town only to have his entire life questioned. Pretty vague, but it's been described in the past as being similar in tone to Erin Brockovich. Expect filming to begin next spring. [TheFilmStage]
