Tilda Swinton and Jamie Bell circling Bong Joon-Ho's 'Snow Piercer'
It can't be a coincidence. Three of the best filmmakers in South Korea are all in the process of making their English-language debuts, and finding top tier talent to fill out their casts has been easy as pie. Park Chan-Wook(Oldboy) snagged Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman for Stoker; and Kim Ji-Woon(I Saw the Devil) has the greatest action hero ever in Arnold Schwarzenegger flexing his muscles in The Last Stand. If Bong Joon-Ho(The Host, Mother) is going to keep up for his sci-fi adaptation, Snow Piercer, he's going to have to go big.
Already set to star Song Kang-Ho(The Good, The Bad, The Weird) and possibly adding Chris Evans in the lead, Variety reports that Tilda Swinton and Jamie Bell may be joining the international cast. The pair of Brits are in the midst of the awards season, where both have films which are making a splash. Swinton is earning raves for her performance in We Need To Talk About Kevin, while Bell's The Adventures of Tintin recently won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. He'll be seen next week in the thriller, Man On A Ledge, which would make for a surefire awards contender....on Bizarro World.
Based on Jacques Lob's French graphic novel, Le Transperceneige, the story takes place in a future where extreme climate change has the world in a perpetual winter. The few remaining human survivors board a train with no clear destination, and as supplies dwindle, lawlessness and savagery break out.
Chan-Wook is on board to produce, with Joon-Ho adapting the script. With his resume, it's no wonder so many are flocking to be a part of his films. From the sound of it, there are a lot more roles yet to be filled, and with production starting in March, there may be more big names to come. I'm making this priority #1 on my Must Read list.
