Tommy Lee Jones is General MacArthur in Peter Webber's 'Emperor'
If you need someone to play a stern, by the book commanding officer or special agent, Tommy Lee Jones is probably the first number on your speed dial. Last year he played fictional WWII General Phillips in Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger, and now he's venturing back into the battle as the most well known general in this country's history. He'll be joining Mattthew Fox in Emperor, a historical period drama directed by Peter Webber(Girl with a Pearl Earring).
The film is based on actual events following the Japanese surrender to conclude WWII, when the country was trying to decide what to do with the country. Matthew Fox plays General Bonner Fellers, a Japanese expert called in to help make a critical decision, whether or not to have Hirohito charged for war crimes. MacArthur, who was made de facto leader of Japan after the war, is fighting to have all charges against Hirohito dropped.
So it's not your conventional WWII flick, as it'll be more about what happens afterwards and not so heavy on the fighting. There will be a central romance, involving Fellers relationship with a Japanese woman he met years before, and his attempt to locate her in post-war Japan.
Between Jones and Fox, this is already shaping up to be Webber's best film in nine years. Production is expected to begin later in the month, so expect more casting news to land soon.
