Tops at the Box Office: 'The Devil Inside' takes possession of #1

1. The Devil Inside- $34.5M
You want to know why the "found footage" genre of horrors will never go away? Because they're super cheap, and even when the vast majority of the audience thinks they suck to holy hell, all it takes is one weekend of success to be a financial success. Such is the case with The Devil Inside, which has an "F" Cinemascore and a crushing 7% at Rotten Tomatoes, but has already made 30 times it's production cost. Unreal. Don't be surprised if next year we see The Devil Inside Me, Too stinking up theaters.

2. Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol- $20.5M/$170M
3. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows-  $14.1M/$157M
4. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo-  $11.4M/$76.8M
After a slow start, this is looking like it may be a bonafide, adult-oriented hit. Whether it cracks $100M domestic is going to depend on if it maintains a strong hold against soft January competition, and whether the film receives any sort of Oscar buzz. The jury is out on that one.
5. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked- $9.5M/$112M
6. War Horse- $8.6M/$56.8M
7. We Bought A Zoo- $8.45M/$56.5M
8. The Adventures of Tintin- $6.6M/$61.9M
Well, at least it's kicking ass globally, totaling over $300M so far. Is that enough to guarantee a Peter Jackson-directed sequel? I sure hope so. Tintin was far and away the best animated film we saw all year.
9. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy- $5.77M/$10.4M
A smart marketing campaign emphasizing the talented Brit cast and the film's espionage elements are part of the reason why Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is suddenly looking like it may find domestic success. An increase in over 800 additional theaters didn't hurt, either.
10. New Year's Eve- $3.27M/$52M
