Disney looking to adapt 'Peter and the Starcatchers' for the big screen

Fairy tale movies are all the rage right now, with Snow White the most popular of those at the moment. However, Peter Pan is definitely a close second, with a couple of very unique takes on the J.M. Barrie novel in the works. One is a modern day murder mystery directed by Ben Hibon and starring Aaron Eckhardt. The other is Peter Pan Begins, an origin story with Channing Tatum listed as a producer. Now there's another one that wants to explore the beginnings of the boy who wouldn't grow up, as Disney plans on adapting Peter and the Starcatchers for the silver screen.

The 2004 novel was written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson for Hyperion Books, which just so happens to be a Disney subsidiary. The first in a series of five novels that precede Barrie's Peter and Wendy, it explores Peter Pan's backstory as he and his gang safeguard a trunk that contains "the greatest treasure on earth". The book was adapted into a hit Broadway play, which just snagged nine Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Play.

Red hot writer Jesse Wigutow is writing the script, with Disney obviously having big hopes of crafting a major franchise out of this. Wigutow is currently working with Brian Kirk on an adaptation of Robert Ludlum's The Osterman Weekend, and also is developing a reboot of The Crow for F. Javier Gutierrez. [Deadline]
