Mia Wasikowska, Cate Blanchett to star in adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 'Carol'

If you couldn't tell, Cannes is in full swing and that means films are being sold and pitched left and right. With that comes a flurry of news about upcoming projects, some which sound fantastic, and others considerably less so. One that is definitely the former features two actresses that to me have seemed destined to work together: Mia Wasikowska and Cate Blanchett.

The two ladies will star in Carol, an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novel, The Price of Salt. Highsmith is the author behind the many suspense novels that include The Talented Mr. Ripley. This one, however, is less thriller and more dramatic piece, set in the 1950s and following two women: one a big dreaming department store clerk in her 20s; the other a slightly older woman going through a messy separation and divorce. The two become inseparable and embark on a complex, sexually charged relationship. Phyllis Nagy(Mrs. Harris) will write the screenplay.

John Crowley, who helped take Andrew Garfield to superstardom in the excellent drama, Boy A, will be behind the camera. Crowley hasn't quite lived up to the expectations after that film, or the excellent Irish crime comedy, Intermission, but this has all the pieces to change that really fast.
