Explosive new 'Prometheus' poster; Ridley Scott talks his 'Blade Runner' sequel

As we've inched closer to the June 8th release of Ridley Scott's Prometheus, the director and 20th Century Fox have been dropping more hints about the true nature of the film. Some would say they're inching into spoiler territory with all the footage we've been getting, but for the most part we're still in the dark about what we're in store for. On the other hand, Scott has been chatty about why he came back to the Alien franchise after being away for thirty years. He tells The Daily Beast...

Scott: “I came back to a very simple question that haunted me that appears in the first Alien, and no one answered in subsequent Alien films: who was the ”Space Jockey”—the big guy in the seat?  If you really go into that, it becomes the basis for a pretty interesting story. When I went to the studio, we didn’t know if it was going to be a sequel or a prequel."

Yeah, it's pretty much neither a prequel or sequel, as we've known for awhile now. It takes place in the same Alien world, but deals with much larger issues than what we've previously seen.  Scott also talks a little bit about what became of his franchise after he left it, like some of the crappy spinoffs we've seen recently....

Scott:  "Listen, you do whatever you gotta do to keep something going, and I don’t do that. I tend to make the film and move on. Ironically, here we are over 30 years later and I think you might not even argue it’s a prequel. Once you start into the evolution of the story, it moves so far away from Alien that there’s only the mere DNA of the original in Prometheus."

Prometheus isn't the only classic sci-fi franchise Scott is keen on revisiting, though. For the last year we've been hearing about his return to Blade Runner, his 1982 film which starred Harrison Ford. One of the prevailing rumors that has persisted is the possible return of Ford as Rick Deckard, but those stories were almost immediately shot down by a producer, before Scott himself kinda left the door cracked for a return. With no clear idea whether it would be a sequel or a prequel, anything was possible. When asked about the film, Scott only had one thing to say, but it was a big thing....

Scott: "Funny enough, I started my first meetings on the Blade Runner sequel last week. We have a very good take on it. And we’ll definitely be featuring a female protagonist."

Really? Scott is probably one of the best when it comes to presenting strong female characters, so this makes plenty of sense. It wouldn't be totally surprising if he seeks out Noomi Rapace for the part, or perhaps even Angelina Jolie, who he's still planning to do that Gertrude Bell biopic with. This doesn't necessarily rule out Ford's return, though it does make it a little less likely.

Lastly, a new international poster for Prometheus has been release, featuring a pretty crucial scene that's been depicted in the trailers. Again, some would say even this is too much information, but if you've been watching all of the footage then you already knew this was going to happen.
