Guillermo Del Toro to co-direct stop motion 'Pinocchio' with Mark Gustafson

There are a number of high profile Pinocchio adaptations floating around out there, but the one that has always seemed the most promising has been developing with Guillermo Del Toro for the last few years. Initially with the plan to direct a darker, stop-motion 3D version of the fairy tale, Del Toro decided to step into a producer role instead, with animator Mark Gustafson and Gris Grimly co-directing. That was more than a year ago when that came about, and in that time Del Toro has clearly had a change of heart, as he's revealed to Variety that he'll be replacing Grimly as co-director.

The story will be far and away different than the cheerful Disney version we all know. This one will be much darker, and more in keeping with Carlo Collodi's original book. It will be based on Grimly's 2002 novel, which also appears to have taken directly from Collodi's work. The Blue-haired fairy, for instance, is really the spirit of a dead girl.  The giant whale we see in the animated film is really a massive dogfish, and Pinochio's run-ins with other characters are a bit more mean-spirited than we've seen presented before. Grimly's book also has some stuff with Pinocchio hallucinating about black rabbits, which I don't remember from Collodi's book.

Nick Cave(The Proposition) is still on board to provide the music(awesome!!!), and this will likely be the first thing Del Toro does once Pacific Rim wraps up. Filming is set to begin in the summer of 2013, with a hefty year long window for post-production.
