Julianne Hough to star in Nicholas Sparks adaptation, 'Safe Haven'

Just a little math for you guys out there: Nicholas Sparks has written 16 novels up to this point, and like 7 of them have been brought to the big screen. That means we've got a lot of suffering through formulaic tear-jerkers left to go, so let's just strap ourselves in for the ride. The next one on the way is Safe Haven, which we learned last month had Josh Duhamel as one of the co-leads. A couple of days ago it was rumored that Keira Knightley would take on the female lead, but she turned it down, with Julianne Hough now stepping in.

Variety has the story, stating that the Dancing with the Stars alum will play Katie Feldman, a mysterious woman with a dark past who shows up in a small North Carolina town and tries to keep to herself. However, she's drawn into two reluctant relationships, one with a widowed father(Duhamel) of two kids; the other with her single neighbor named Jo.  Expect that one of these people she loves will end up dead at some point. Lasse Hallstron, who directed the Sparks adaptation, Dear John, is back for this one as well.

Hough has been building quite the career for herself since graduating from that terrible dance competition. I thought she held her own quite nicely in Footloose, capitalizing on her obvious vocal and physical talents. She'll keep up with the musical bit as part of Adam Shankman's Rock of Ages, and then she'll go into Diablo Cody's directorial debut, Lamb of God.
