Marion Cotillard says Miranda Tate is a "good guy" in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Want to know something I put absolutely zero stock in? Anything anybody involved with The Dark Knight Rises has to say about anything involving characters in The Dark Knight Rises. Period. Sorry, they've done too good of a job spinning us news hounds into a tizzy with all their secrecy about who is playing what and why. So when Marion Cotillard, who is playing the rather mysterious Miranda Tate, says she's a "good guy" for the entire length of the film, it sounds a little bit fishy.

From the very beginning, people have speculated that Tate would turn out to really be Talia Al Ghul, the daughter of Ra's Al Ghul(Liam Neeson), the villain of Batman Begins. Tate's character has been described as simply being a Wayne Enterprises board member, who helps Bruce Wayne(Christian Bale) in his endeavors to help Gotham City. That never felt quite right, and the clear lack of any elaboration on her character has only made it more suspicious. Tate is practically a non-entity in the trailers. Let's not forget that we already know that Liam Neeson will at least make a cameo in the film, and back in January, Joey King revealed that she would be playing a younger Talia Al Ghul. Cotillard tells THR that Tate only wants to help provide clean energy to the world, and that she stays a good guy for the entire length of the film. I just don't buy it. In the end, the entire point of Christopher Nolan's series has been about legacies, specifically by parents passed on to their children. It wouldn't make thematic sense for Talia to not be involved in some way.

I could be wrong, though, and at this point it would be more of a surprise if Tate isn't Al Ghul in disguise. Maybe we're all wrong. What if Juno Temple, who has a character even more hidden in shadow than Cotillard, actually turned out to be Al Ghul? I wouldn't put anything past Christopher Nolan at this point. We'll have to wait and see when The Dark Knight Rises opens on July 20th.
