Robert Downey Jr. may join Tom Cruise in 'El Presidente'; Jay Roach to direct

Wait a second. Are we about to see super IMF Agent Ethan Hunt pairing up with the brilliant and reckless Tony Stark in a film full of political intrigue, wild chases, and tons of action? Well, not quite, but we could be looking at Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. in a political action comedy to be directed by Jay Roach(Game Change).

For a couple of years Warner Brothers has been developing El Presidente, a comedy with Tom Cruise attached to star, and at one point with Jack Nicholson circling the other lead role. The film follows a down 'n out Secret Service agent assigned to guard the worst former President(George W. Bush??), a bumbling scumbag(Oh definitely Bush). Things get out of hand when the ex-Prez's life is threatened and they must go on the run. WB now has their sights on Downey Jr. taking on the role of the former President, with Cruise as the agent assigned to protect him. Roach, who already has the The Campaign with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis on the way, seems to be every studio's first choice for directing political comedies.

There's a good chance this won't happen considering the packed schedules of all three men, but it's good to see some movement on the film because there's a ton of potential here. The script comes from Dan Goor, a writer on NBC's Parks & Recreation. [Vulture]
