Sylvain Chomet preps 'The Triplets of Belleville' prequel

It's always a special occasion anytime Sylvain Chomet has another animated film on the way. The landscape has pretty much been dominated by Pixar and Dreamworks over the last decade, and when you factor in Academy Award wins, Pixar is the unquestioned champion. However, Chomet has managed to find great success, and a couple of Best Animated Feature nominations, with his two most recent films: last year's The Illusionist, and 2003's The Triplets of Belleville.

'Belleville' was the one that had the most impact here in America, and for good reason. The story centered on a trio of elderly, improvisational singers who used to be big time lounge hall singers in the 1930s. The vintage, hand drawn animation coupled with the offbeat tone made it one of the most unique films of the year, but it ultimately was beaten out by Finding Nemo for the Oscar win. The film also received a nomination for the original song, 'Belleville Rendez-Vous'. Screen Daily reports that Chomet is looking to revisit the film in the form of a prequel titled Swing Popa Swing, which will explore the early careers of the singing siblings.

Chomet is currently working on the script, and is expected to have it done by the summer. That means we may see it some time around 2014 or 2015, so we may be looking at another Academy Award showdown between Chomet and Pixar.  Lucky for us!
