Trailer Time: 'Killer Joe', starring Matthew McConaughey and Emile Hirsch

Labeling anything the "greatest performance of Matthew McConaughey's career" is basically like stepping over a sleeping garter snake. It's a pretty low bar, as he hasn't had a whole lot to hang his hat on in the years following A Time to Kill. However the last year has seen him making some bold strides into respectability, with The Lincoln Lawyer showing that he can occasionally be more than a bare chest and a surfer attitude.

Without a doubt, McConaughey is receiving some amazing critical buzz for his turn as a cold-blooded hitman in Killer Joe, the latest film from William Friedkin(The Exorcist, Bug). Emile Hirsch stars as a guy who hires the titular killer to murder his own mother to collect the life insurance policy, and pay off some really bad dudes who want their money. As we see in this latest trailer for the NC-17 rated flick, he can't quite come up with the up front cash, and so he puts up his sister(Juno Temple) as a retainer. When things go bad, Killer Joe still plans on collecting, and of course things get even worse from there. Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon co-star.

Technically, Killer Joe is labeled as something of a dark comedy, but you only get a few moments of sheer absurdity here. The rest is straight up bleak, and deadly violent. I'm curious to see how this pans out, as response to the film itself has been mixed. Killer Joe will arrive on July 27th. Check out the trailer below....
