Sam Claflin confirmed as Finnick Odair in 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire'

I guess Lionsgate has decided to stop toying with us. The most sought after role in Hollywood for young male stars over the last few months has been that of Finnick Odair, the popular, athletic, and charismatic former victor who plays a major role in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and the upcoming Mockinjay. We've seen a number of big names mentioned for the role already, such as Robert Pattinson, Taylor Kitsch, and Armie Hammer. But instead it's probably the least known of the bunch who finally snagged it, as it's now been confirmed Sam Claflin has officially signed on.

Claflin has been in the running since last month, and if anything, the silence from the studio surrounding it was very revealing in that it showed they were serious about him from the start. Claflin is probably the least exciting choice Lionsgate could have made, considering he's sortof vanished in both Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Snow White and the Huntsman. The studio likely sees this as the perfect middle ground, as they were seriously considering bringing in an unknown for the part. Claflin has franchise experience, but is new enough to folks that he can built as a future star.

Claflin joins the growing list of new additions to The Hunger Games story, including , Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amanda Plummer, Jena Malone, possibly Tony Shalhoub, and a bunch of others nobody knows. Catching Fire is directed by by Francis Lawrence and opens next year on November 22nd.
