Skin-crawling new trailer and promo for Brandon Cronenberg's 'Antiviral'

It must be in the genes. David Cronenberg has long since moved on past the body horrors that defined his early career, choosing instead to delve into complex character flicks like A History of Violence, Cosmopolis, and A Dangerous Method. For fans dying for something similar to his older stuff like The Fly and Dead Ringers, all you really need to do is look a little bit further down the Cronenberg family tree.

Antiviral was written and directed by David's son, Brandon Cronenberg, and it looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree at all. The deeply unsettling film collides our stupid celebrity culture with the trademark Cronenberg blood and psychosis, presenting a near future where people can infect themselves with the diseases of their favorite celebrities. Pretty freakin' sick and twisted, right? Caleb Landry Jones(X-men: First Class) plays Syd March, an employee at the Lucas Clinic who performs these crazy injections on the black market. Infected with the same sickness that killed a megastar named Hannah Geist, Syd becomes a target of her crazed fans, but must also figure out how she died in order to save his own life.

The film premiered at Cannes to largely positive reviews, and will turn up at TIFF in just a few weeks. Um, I wouldn't want the trailer over lunch or anything, unless you've got a waste bucket nearby. It's pretty disgusting, and those with a aversion to bodily fluid may want to avoid the trailer and film completely.  IFC Midnight will likely release the film before the end of the year....[Yahoo! via BleedingCool]
