What a way to end an evening, with the tragic news last night that Tony Scott has died at the age of 68 in what appears to be a suicide. Scott was the director behind a number of classic films, and some of my own personal favorites, such as Top Gun, True Romance, The Last Boyscout, and Man on Fire. The details at this point are slim, but reports say he jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro around 12:30pm. A suicide note was found in his vehicle.
Scott was far more than a director, and along with his elder brother, Ridley, became a producer of some renown through their production company, Scott Free. Born in North Shields, England, Scott began his career at the age of 16 in his brother's short-film, Boy and Bicycle. He went on to direct a British TV movie, before heading to Hollywood for his feature film directorial debut, The Hunger. The vampire film would establish his signature kinetic style behind the camera, which helped lead him to directing a string of action hits that helped define an era. Scott found equal success on the small screen, recently serving as a producer on the hit CBS series, The Good Wife. The last film he directed was 2010's Unstoppable, with Denzel Washington, and he had a number or upcoming projects in development, most notably a sequel to Top Gun and a big screen version of 24.
Whatever Scott's reasons are for doing what he did don't really matter, and I won't begin to speculate. Our hearts go out to his family and friends over their loss.
