Say good night to The Dark Tower. At least in the form it's in right now. When last we heard of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's massive adaptation of Stephen King's fantasy/western/sci-fi series, Russell Crowe was considering taking over as gunslinger Roland Deschain while Warner Brothers mulled picking up the film. This comes after Universal initially rejected their plan, which would have encompassed three feature films, a couple of TV seasons, and a huge budget. The script underwent an overhaul in order to slash costs, but apparently it wasn't enough to entice Warner Bros., who have now officially passed on it.
So where does this leave things? HBO had been set to take on the TV portion, and I'm inclined to think maybe there's a chance of the whole feature film element being dropped. Certainly, there's enough story in The Dark Tower to make for some incredible television for a lot of years. WB and HBO both fall under the TimeWarner umbrella, so anything's possible.
After being rejected twice, it's probably more likely that The Dark Tower has fallen for the last time. [Variety]
