When will the dragon Smaug appear in 'The Hobbit' movies?
If there's a reason to get really excited over The Hobbit, it's seeing how Peter Jackson is going to bring the dragon Smaug to life. The dragon, who guards the treasures within the Lonely Mountain, will be portrayed in motion capture and voice by the awesomely named Benedict Cumberbatch(War Horse). In Tolkien's novels, we don't really see anything of Smaug until the final battle, but will that be the case in Jackson's movies?
While doing press for the BBC series, Parade's End, Cumberbatch revealed to Anne Richardson just how much and we'll see of Smaug in the first film....
Cumberbatch: "I think my eye might open at the end of the first film and then you’ll get the rest of me in the second."
I'm not sure how accurate that statement remains, as he said it before The Hobbit was changed into a trilogy. It's possible Jackson will shift things around a little bit. We'll find out when The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens on December 14th.[BleedingCool]
