Scott Derrickson to direct supernatural cop thriller 'Beware the Night'

After bursting onto the scene with the surprise horror hit, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Scott Derrickson took a detour into tentpole territory with The Day the Earth Stood Still, which also proved to be a box office hit even if audiences weren't exactly clamoring for more of it. Jumping back into his favored genre and earning some solid early buzz for the Ethan Hawke-starrer, Sinister, Derrickson is already lining up his next project, and it sounds like something right in his wheelhouse.

The Wrap reports that Derrickson will direct Beware the Night, a supernatural thriller set in a paranormal world, and following a NYC cop who investigates real life demon possessions, exorcisms, werewolves, and other things that go bump in the night. Derrickson will be rewriting the script, and at one point the lead role was offered to Mark Wahlberg but he turned it down. Guess it wasn't gritty enough for him. Kinda scary if the guy who agreed to Max Payne turns your film down.

Disney and Screen Gems are negotiating to snag the film's rights, and if Disney gets their mitts on it this could turn into another huge hit for the director. Right now it's unclear when this would roll, as Derrickson signed on to direct a remake of Zwart Water with Charlize Theron. Sinister hits theaters on October 5th, and you can check out a trailer for it here.
