Has Sony decided to kill off Gwen Stacy in 'The Amazing Spider-Man' trilogy?

With word that Shailene Woodley is circling the role of Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man sequel, the inevitable question was how this would effect the presence of Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. We all know how tragically things turn out for her in the comics, and back in August Stone revealed her desire to have the character die off in the same iconic manner. She may be getting what she asked for, as buried in a recent THR story about Woodley taking the lead in Divergent came this little nugget...

"But the Mary Jane role is proving to be only a very small part in Amazing Spider-Man 2 but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie as the studio seeks to build to the classic "Death of Gwen Stacy" story"

In the comics, Mary Jane is a large part of the reason why Peter Parker is able to overcome his grief over Gwen's death, so it makes sense to have her introduced in the next film in only a minor role. I'm making the assumption that Gwen would die in the next film, and then the third chapter would have Peter and Mary Jane building into the lovers we all know them to be.

But I also can't shake this feeling that THR might be speculating a little bit here. So it's probably best to take this with a grain of salt. Stone still isn't officially signed on to the sequel, and part of the negotiations may be her angling to have Gwen be killed off. We'll see what happens. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to swing into theaters on May 2nd 2014.
