Tony award-winning musical 'Memphis' headed to big screen

The Broadway invasion of Hollywood continues, and doesn't seem to be slowing down in the least. It's like every studio is chasing their own Chicago, and with adaptations of Jersey Boys, Les Miserables, and Into the Woods either on the way or in-development, one of them is bound to be a hit. Which also means the trend isn't likely to stop any time soon.

Warner Bros.' Alcon Entertainment is the next to join the party, and they're teaming up with The Mark Gordon Company to produce an adaptation of Memphis, the four time Tony-winning play from Joe DiPietro and David Bryan.  DiPietro will write the screenplay, which is set in 1950s Memphis during the rock 'n roll boom, and follows a white DJ who enters into a dangerous affair with an upcoming African-American singer.

I'm curious to see who they'll get to direct this, as Rob Marshall(Chicago, Nine) is probably too busy with Into the Woods to take on something like this. Expect this to be a big deal production, though, with a lot of top stars and filmmakers likely to be considered. [Deadline]
