Man or Muppet? Ricky Gervais to star in 'The Muppets' sequel
I think Ricky Gervais is one hella funny dude, but on the big screen he's starred in some pretty horrible flicks. At least as a leading man, neither of his performances in Ghost Town or The Invention of Lying were all that impressive, and the films themselves generally laugh-free. Hopefully that won't be the case for his next project, otherwise there will be some rolling heads over at Disney.
Gervais is in talks for the lead human role in The Muppets sequel, joining the recently added Ty Burrell. He'll be taking on a similarly sized part as the departed Jason Segel, so expect to see Gervais' face on a lot of posters surrounded by colorful puppets. The European-set caper is said to have three major human characters, so there's still one left to be filled. Burrell is set to play an Interpol agent while Gervais' role is still unknown. There would have to be plenty of singing though, right? You've got Ricky Gervais. Better make him bust out a tune.
Gervais shot a cameo for the first film, but like so many others it was left on the cutting room floor. I wonder if he'd have gotten this gig if it had made it in? James Bobin, Nicolas Stoller, and Bret McKenzie will get crackin' on The Muppets 2 in January. [THR]
