Hayley Atwell won't be back for 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

We're still waiting to hear who will taking on the female lead in Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The part is rumored to be for Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter, who was played quite brilliantly by Hayley Atwell in the first film. Unfortunately, while we have no update on any new casting, we know that Atwell won't be reprising her role.

Time Out had the chance to speak to Atwell, and she apparently confirmed it to them. Here's the relevant info....
It was last year’s double-whammy of Golden Globe nomination for miniseries The Pillars of the Earth and blockbuster debut as Chris Evans’s’ all-action girlfriend in Captain America: the First Avenger that brought her to international attention. She won’t, she confirms, be back for the latter’s sequel, which moves the action into the present day.

Atwell likely wouldn't have had much of a presence, anyway, except maybe in flashback. She recently left the upcoming comedy spinoff, 10 Things I Hate About Life, presumably to film the second season of Black Mirror.

Jessica Brown Findlay was last said to be the frontrunner for the Sharon Carter role, so hopefully we'll get confirmation on that soon. Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Maria Hill, Samuel L. Jackson, Frank Grillo, and Scarlett Johansson will star in Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th 2014.
