New images from Wong Kar-Wai's 'The Grandmaster' with Tony Leung

We've been waiting a long time for Wong Kar-Wai's latest film, The Grandmaster. His first since 2007's My Blueberry Nights, which I think is better than people gave it credit for, the film stars the great Tony Leung as Yip Man, the Wang Chung martial arts master who trained Bruce Lee. As the January 8th release date in China rapidly approaches, we're being treated to a handful of new photos, along with a reveal of the film's run time. You might want to pack a lunch.

Hong Kong's Newport Theater site has listed The Grandmaster's running time at 133 minutes, making it his second longest film behind 2046. It didn't bother me then, and I doubt it will bother me now, espeically since these new photos indicate this will be far more than just watching Leung beat up a bunch of dudes in the rain. Granted, that would be pretty cool, but clearly there will be just as much passion and romance to this story as fists of fury.

The Grandmaster ranks on my most anticipated list for this year, so it could be 233 minutes and I'd still be excited. It'll play at the Berlin Film Festival next month, then hopefully find its way here soon after.
