Four clips from 'The Place Beyond the Pines' with Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper

The winter and spring months aren't usually where the most ambitious films tend to land, but Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines is the welcome exception to the rule. A sprawling, thematically rich drama with an incredible cast, the film is expected to make a lot of noise when it arrives in a few weeks. I've made it a point to stress that anyone hoping to see it should go in knowing as little as possible, as the story goes to some interesting and unexpected directions.

Fortunately, all of the clips that have been released so far have done a good job of merely setting up the mood rather than giving away crucial plot points. Four more have been released, and they each show a different aspect to the story. In one, Ryan Gosling's stunt cyclist turned bank robber has a humorous planning session with his new partner, played by Ben Mendelsohn. Is it me, or does Mendelsohn play greasy lowlife better than anyone? Another shows some of the entanglements Bradley Cooper's small-town cop gets into, while the others show Gosling paired up with Eva Mendes, as the woman he hooks up with occasionally as he blows through town.
