There has never been a shortage of films one would call "Visually Stunning" coming out of Hollywood....it's kind of their thing, but don't sell this film short on that catchphrase alone. Ang Lee creates something with Life of Pi that provokes a level of thought in his story equal to the astonishing level of visual fantasy on the screen. While this isn't a "turn off your brain for two hours" film by any means, it IS a movie that's well worth the level of intellectual interaction it requires of it's viewer. Personally I would say this is a must have for the collection, however I can see how the replay value wouldn't be high for many. Still, it's a buy if for no other reason than to bring some sophistication to your rack of Dolph Lundgren's greatest hits!
BUY
Hitchcock:
Anthony Hopkins perfectly plays the owner of the most famous double chin in Hollywood....master of suspense and father of modern horror, Alfred Hitchcock. This film hit for me on too many levels to list, mainly that I've always dug 'inside movie making' type films, but it brought much more than just that. An inside look at a Hollywood legend brilliantly played by another Hollywood legend, the best is the surprise love story you don't see coming between Hitchcock and his wife (played wonderfully by Helen Mirren). A must see.
BUY
Rise of the Guardians:
Without a doubt the most criminally overlooked major release of the year. I have no idea why this film wasn't a smash hit but hopefully it gets it's due on home video. A holiday hero team up featuring all the majors (Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, etc) with a heartwarming story, beautiful animation, great action, and perfect voice acting. If you missed this in the theaters get it NOW for Easter!
BUY
Playing for Keeps:
I'm going to put as much effort into this as the filmmakers did in making it.
SKIP
Willow:
I generally don't give new Blu-Ray releases their own write up but I thought this was especially of note, not just because I love this sadly underrated fantasy adventure, but because of what it signifies. Willow is/was a Lucasfilm production. Lucasfilm, as many will know, was always stingy with their re-releases (if their weren't additions to the film that everyone would hate, that is). Willow is the first real evidence of Disney's white-gloved hand on LFL properties, here's to Disney marketing the hell out of stuff and us reaping the benefits!
