Sure Shots: David Goyer; Elton John; Nick Jonas
* Although he's best known as the writer behind The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel, David Goyer has been known to step behind the camera every once in awhile. The Blade Trinity helmer is stepping back behind the camera to bring Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo to the big screen. The 1844 novel has been adapted numerous times, including a 2002 film with Guy Pearce, and follows a man named Edmond Dantès who is betrayed and imprisoned for treason. After years, he escapes and finds his way to incredible wealth, returning as "the Count of Monte Cristo" to seek revenge. Michael Robert Johnson, who penned Paul W.S. Anderson's Pompeii, is writing the screenplay, which plans to bring a graphic novel approach to the material. In other words, it will look like Anderson's Resident Evil movies. [THR]
* It's been a couple of years since we learned about the Elton John biopic, Rocketman, and now the film has finally secured a director in Michael Gracey. The film is said to combine true elements of the musician's life with a fantastical atmosphere backed by his hit songs. Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) will write the script, which follows John's life from the age of 11 to adulthood. Gracey was once in line to direct Disney's Order of the Seven before it fell through, but he's since gone on to be the go-to guy for biopics. He has The Greatest Showman on Earth with Hugh Jackman on the way, and also has the Jim Henson biopic, The Muppet Man. [Deadline]
* Are The Jonas Brothers still a thing, or is that over now? Eh, it doesn't really matter, does it? Nick Jonas, who has appeared in more than his share of concert movies and the terrible Camp Rock films, is set to have his first major feature role in Careful What You Wish For. He'll star alongside Isabel Lucas (Red Dawn) in the thriller, directed by Aquamarine's Elizabeth Allen. Described as being in the vein of Basic Instinct, the story follows a man who enters into a torrid affair with the wife of a wealthy investment banker, only for the husband to turn up dead.
