New 'Despicable Me 2' poster; trailer debuts tomorrow
Universal Pictures is taking a totally different path in hyping the sequel to their $540M hit, Despicable Me. Steve Carell was heavily pushed as the big draw in getting the animated franchise off the ground, but we've seen practically nothing from his Gru character for the follow-up, with the bulk of the focus on his little yellow Minions. We've seen them in various images and teasers for the film, and now a new poster has been released a day before we get a new full-length trailer.
The image shows a Minion named Phil, toweling off and getting ready to help Gru take on a new supervillain voiced by Al Pacino. Details have been kept under wraps, but we know Russell Brand and Miranda Cosgrove will be returning, joined by newcomers Steve Coogan, Kristen Wiig, Moises Arias (Noobz), and Ken Jeong.
The reason for all of the Minion love has to do with Universal planning to spin them off into their solo franchise with Sandra Bullock as their nemesis. Despicable Me 2 opens on July 3rd.
