* Guys, let your ladies know there's another easy-going romantic comedy from Nancy Meyers on the way, four years after her last hit, It's Complicated. The new untitled film will be set in the U.K. and feature an all-British cast except for the one female American lead, whose “life gets turned upside-down when she begins dating a very unlikely young man”. Promisingly, the original script was written by (500) Days of Summer and The Spectacular Now scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber, although Meyers has rewritten the latest draft. [Deadline]
* Jared Harris has been pretty good at playing bad dudes, including Professor Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and now he may be playing another in Paul W.S. Anderson's historical disaster film, Pompeii. Already starring Emily Browning and Kit Harington, the film will be set during the famous two-day volcanic eruption, following a slave named Milo who loves Flavia, the daughter of Lucretius (Harris), the shipping tycoon who owns him. When Mt. Vesuvius erupts and the city is threatened, Milo must rescue her and his gladiator best friend before it's too late.
* A few weeks after Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right) exited the adaptation of Judith Viorst's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Disney has found her replacement. Cedar Rapids director Miguel Arteta has taken over the film which still has Steve Carell attached to star. The story, adapted by Cholodenko and Rob Lieber, centers on a young boy who wakes up with gum in his hair, and the day just goes straight downhill from there for him and his family. Arteta knows a thing or two about combining comedy with dramatic touches, so this should be a good fit all around.
