Whatever the expectations for Kick-Ass were back in 2010, the film clearly surpassed them. While much larger and vastly more expensive superhero movies were racking up hundreds of millions of dollars everywhere, Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of the gritty Mark Millar comic was like a red-headed stepchild. Without any major names and certainly no recognizable heroes, the film not only racked up nearly $100M but became a pop culture phenomenon. After much delay, and the loss of Vaughn behind the camera, the sequel was finally green lit with Jeff Wadlow taking over. Would he be able to capitalize on the first film's success? Well now we can begin to judge for ourselves as the first trailer for Kick-Ass 2 is finally here.
Of course, this wouldn't be Kick-Ass if the trailer wasn't of the red band variety, and the footage is full of the violence and foul language fans of the film would be hoping for. Starting off with a practice session between breakout character Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz) and a seriously bulked up Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson), we soon see that the world has changed considerably. New heroes are emerging everywhere, including Jim Carrey as the militaristic Colonel Stars and Stripes. But a hero is nothing without a nemesis, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse has gone full board evil as the Red Mist, who has changed his name to The Motherfucker and begun to assemble his own team of villains known as the Toxic Mega-Cunts. Meanwhile, Kick-Ass joins a group of street heroes known as Justice Forever.
Some of the effects are a little sketchy, but the off-kilter energy is high and the performances look terrific. Co-starring Donald Faison, Clark Duke, Lindy Booth, John Leguizamo, Olga Kurkulina, and many more, Kick-Ass 2 hits theaters on August 16th.
