Shia LaBeouf and Robert De Niro are father/son spies in 'Spy's Kid'
So maybe Shia LaBeouf wasn't kidding when he said he was tired of getting chased around in Transformers flicks, because he's been branching out to vastly different things ever since. He'll strip down for Lars Von Trier's erotic thriller, The Nymphomaniac, and recently exposed Robert Redford in The Company You Keep. Now he'll venture into the world of espionage with Robert De Niro in Spy's Kid, which is based on a pretty incredible true story.
Ignore the title's similarity to the Robert Rodriguez kiddie spy franchise, as this film has considrably more meat to it. Based on a six-part series of articles in The Oregonian, the story centers on Nathan Nicholson (LaBeouf), a 24-year old college student arrested by the FBI for sharing secrets with the Russians, which just so happens to be the same crime committed by his father, John Nicholson (De Niro), a former high-ranking official in the CIA. Nathan ultimately would testify against his father to get a deal, even though it was John who trained him in the spy game to begin with.
It's still early stages on this one as no writer has been hired. But if it does move forward it will be LaBeouf's Eagle Eye and Disturbia director D.J. Caruso behind the camera.
