"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". One of the finer points hammered home about Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) is his recklessness and clear willingness to bend or break Starfleet's rules. But does even he have the stones the break their prime directive? That's the quandary he and the rest of the Enterprise crew are placed in during the first Star Trek Into Darkness clip, as Spock (Zachary Quinto) is trapped on a planet near an erupting volcano. Kirk is forced to figure out a way to save his friend without interfering in the native culture's natural evolution.
Obviously, J.J. Abrams wouldn't give this clip the thumbs up if it revealed too much, but it does provide a quick peek at how very different Kirk and Spock are. It's also a fine way to get each character on screen, while touching lightly on the connection between Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and Spock.
So is Spock truly a goner? We'll find out when Star Trek Into Darkness opens on May 17th.
