Amanda Seyfried, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Chastain, or Scarlett Johansson could play Hillary Clinton in 'Rodham'
There's no such thing as an off-season when it comes to national politics, that much is true now more than ever. But when your last name is Clinton, that's especially true, and people have been speculating about Hillary Clinton running for President in 2016 for years already. While she's yet to make a firm decision on the matter, a big screen biopic on her career is on the way courtesy of Smashed and The Spectacular Now director James Ponsoldt, and a number of big names are circling the coveted role.
Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Chastain, and Amanda Seyfried are among those contending to star in Rodham, according to The Independent. Young Il-Kim's Black List-approved script will center on the year 1974 when Clinton was a Washington attorney during the Watergate scandal. It also deals with her sticky relationship with Bill Clinton, and the choices she had to make in regards to him and her career. It's not really a surprise that Ponsoldt is looking at A-listers for the role, and chances are an equally big name will be chosen to play her charismatic husband. Surprisingly not on the list as of yet is Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who Ponsoldt has worked with on both of his feature films. It does sound as if he recognizes what an opportunity this is, and will choose whoever is the best fit...
Ponsoldt: “They’re all wonderful actresses. We’re very fortunate that a lot of really great actors are interested in playing these roles. We’re in an enviable position. Regardless of people’s political affiliation or how they feel about Hillary Clinton, you don’t find people who question the quality of her intelligence or her drive. I want a wonderful actress who could embody that.”
Producers will probably want to move quickly on this to ensure a release somewhere around the 2016 elections, so expect a decision to come down soon. All of the frontrunners have experience playing real-life figures, but the chance to play half of Washington's premiere power couple isn't likely to come around again.
