Sure Shots: Benicio Del Toro; Sophia Myles; Jean-Marc Vallee
* Now that financing is all set and filming to begin later this month, Paul Thomas Anderson has some work to do assembling the cast for his adaptation of Inherent Vice. Joaquin Phoenix is the only one confirmed at this point, playing drug-addled gumshoe Doc Sportello, who investigates a kidnapping case in 1960s Los Angeles. With Charlize Theron's involvement still a mystery, the latest to official join up is Benicio Del Toro, playing Sportallo's attorney who isn't actually a criminal lawyer. The role is said to be a potential scene-stealer, even if it's not on screen all that much. [TheWrap]
* So far the casting on Michael Bay's Transformers 4 has been decidedly hottie-free, but that's all changing now with the addition of Sophia Myles (Art School Confidential) as a scientist. She joins Mark Wahlberg, Jack Reynor, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, and Nicola Peltz, with the story taking place four years after the last film. Details are still mostly under wraps, but it sounds as if a group of human scientists and businessmen will get more than they bargained for while studying past Transformers incursions and pushing the limits of controllable technology. * When you are Jean-Marc Vallee and your debut feature is The Young Victoria with Emily Blunt in a plethora of gorgeous period costumes, it's probably best not to expect a lot of attention. Vallee remains an unknown as a filmmaker, although that may change if The Dallas Buyer's Club turns out to be the Oscar-contending film many expect it to be. Even if it doesn't, Vallee is already lining up his next project, titled Demolition. The damage is all emotional in this one, following an investment banker who, after the death of his wife, tears apart his life in an attempt to figure out where he went wrong. Vallee will be working off a Black List script by Bryan Sipe, which was strong enough to secure John Malkovich and Jason Reitman as producers. Definitely one to keep an eye on. [Deadline]
