Jon M. Chu Re-Enlisting for "G.I. Joe 3'
When all was said and done, GI Joe: Retaliation wrapped up its run with a hefty $365M, surpassing the relatively disappointing haul of the 2009 film. Paramount has exactly two people to thank for the sequel's success: Dwayne Johnson and director Jon M. Chu. The Step Up filmmaker was a surprising choice to take over the film, but his familiarity with choreography paired with an obvious love of the toy and cartoon franchise went a long way, and now the studio wants to make sure he comes back for at least one more.
Chu is being sought to direct G.I. Joe 3, which was given the go ahead last spring after a strong $132M opening weekend. Meetings with screenwriters are being set up now, so this is still very early on in the process as a script will need to be hammered out. No word on whether Johnson will be returning but with his proven track record for pumping up franchises it seems like a no-brainer Paramount will throw some money his way. Hopefully the next shoot goes better than the last one, which saw the release date bumped nine months to add 3D and fix some of the issues test audiences found.
Sadly this probably puts the kibosh on Chu's Masters of the Universe film that has been in development forever. Hopefully when he's done with G.I. Joe that will be next on his list, rather than another Justin Bieber concert movie. [Deadline]
