Michael Bay Developing and May Direct Tom Clancy's 'Ghost Recon'
After taking a short break to direct his "low budget" crime film Pain & Gain, Michael Bay has gone back to what he knows best, namely the giant robots and giant expense reports of the Transformers franchise. He's currently filming the latest one right now, and while it's presumably going to be the last one he undertakes, Bay is already looking forward to his next epic franchise.
UbiSoft has taken a proactive hand in developing their many video game series for the big screen already, with Tom Hardy attached to a Splinter Cell movie and Michael Fassbender suiting up for Assassin's Creed. Now Variety reports that they're working with Bay and Warner Bros. to develop Tom Clancy's other military franchise, Ghost Recon, with Bay eying the director's chair. The long-running best-selling games were first published in 2001 and follow a special unit answering only to the President, who use special weapons and technology to go on top secret missions. It's a game that puts an emphasis on stealth rather than just scads of gunfire, which is why Bay kind of makes for an odd choice. When asked about the decision to work with Bay, UbiSoft's CEO said it was “because he is a master at action movies." It sounds as if Bay will be allowed to tweak the game's tone to better accommodate his style.
Casting is set to begin next month and screenwriters (LOL!) are being sought now, so this will more than likely be the next project on Bay's schedule.
