Naomi Watts Is the People's Princess in First Trailer for 'Diana'
It's more than a little surprising that a major theatrical film on the life of Princess Diana has taken this long to come together. The woman known as the "People's Princess" died in a car crash back in 1997, but she remains far and away the most popular figure ever in the Royal Family, and her story continues to captivate the millions who loved her. Later this year that story will be brought to the big screen , with clear Oscar aspirations behind it and a two-time Oscar nominee headlining, and now the first trailer for Diana has arrived and it looks like a definite contender.
Naomi Watts stars as Diana, with the story penned by Steven Jeffreys (The Libertine) focusing on the last few years of her life, after the divorce from Prince Charles. Naveen Andrews (Lost) is Dr. Hasnat Khan, the heart surgeon who was her lover from 1995 until shortly before her death in 1997. He was considered by many to be the love of her life, but the constant media attention drove them apart. The picks up on all of the elements one would expect: the ever-present paparazzi, Diana's inner turmoil, and humanitarianism, and almost legendary status. Watts isn't exactly a dead ring for the Princess of Wales, but she does seem to capture her grace, at least in this brief bit of footage.
Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, Diana opens on September 5th.
