'The Purge' Sequel Already In the Works

After taking small-budget horrors Paranormal Activity,  Sinister, and Insidious to franchise heights, it's no longer a surprise when Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions score another hit. Even so, nobody would have predicted that The Purge would have the massive $36M debut of this past weekend, thoroughly crushing The Internship and its high-powered cast. Looking to capitalize as quickly as possible, Universal and Blumhouse have announced via Twitter that a sequel is in the works..
The Purge was powered by an ingenious concept that involving one day of the year in which all violent crime is legal. That idea is taken and placed within the confines of a home invasion thriller, and a sequel will likely take the premise to a larger level. In my recent interview with Blum he talked about expanding the concept, I'm hoping to a national or even global scale.

It's unclear who from the original film will return, including writer/director James DeMonaco. Blum has had nothing but positive things to say about him, and considering he was such a large part of making The Purge a success, don't be surprised if he comes back in some capacity.
