Because Romeo and Juliet hasn't been adapted into film enough times, and because for some reason people think they can do better than Baz Luhrmann's super-amazing modernized version (the movie that made me first fall in love with Leonardo DiCaprio, just a super momentous moment in my life, no big deal), writer Julian Fellowes's upcoming version of Shakespeare's classic has a new trailer. And, you know, it's kind of boring. Beautiful, and yet so, so boring.
To be real, though, aren't "beautiful" and "boring" exactly what you envision when you think about Downton Abbey, the show that has made Fellowes relevant again? So in that way, I guess, he's just sticking with what he knows. But this film just looks particularly bland, and not at all different from Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 Romeo and Juliet. This too will be a period piece starring young actors spewing the original dialogue while cavorting around beautiful sets, blah blah blah.
The only new thing I see about this version of the story is that Ed Westwick's wig is pretty ridiculous, and I literally laughed out loud during that slow-motion shot of him walking with his hair blowing in his eyes or whatever, right at about the one-minute mark. I don't know. Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl, trying to swordfight? Not into it.
Anyway, Fellowes's Romeo and Juliet, starring Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Paul Giamatti, Ed Westwick, and Damian Lewis, will be released in the U.S. sometime next year. Hope you don't fall asleep during this trailer.
