New Trailer For Neill Blomkamp's 'Elysium' Starring Matt Damon

As the divide between the extremely rich and the working poor continues to widen the world over, we've seen a number of sci-fi films inventively exploring the disastrous effects of economic inequality. Andrew Niccol's In Time and the visually stunning Upside Down are two of the better examples, and this summer sees Neill Blomkamp using it as the springboard for his potential blockbuster, Elysium.

Sony has dropped a new, shorter trailer which features only brief moments of unseen footage. Remaining as one of the season's biggest question marks, Elysium looks to be bring a measure of intelligence to a summer dominated by superheroes and giant monster movies. Matt Damon plays a regular guy struggling to make ends meet on a devastated, diseased Earth populated by the poor, while the rich live in an idyllic, technologically-advanced space station known as Elyisum. When he's hit by radiation and given only five days to live, Damon must buck the social order and make his way to Elysium to find a cure, but he'll have to fight his way through an army sent by Jodie Foster to do it, not to mention her hired attack dog played Sharlto Copley.  The latest trailer doesn't add a lot of new footage,

It's a combination of brains and popcorn thrills that Blomkamp balanced perfectly with District 9 a couple of years ago, so hopefully he can pull it off again now. Elyisum opens on August 9th.
